Montevideo, Jul 15 (EFE).— The Uruguayan government has temporarily suspended permits for the export of live cattle intended for immediate slaughter.Camera: Diana Illa.Statements: Alfredo Fratti, Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay.Translation:1.“Why this temporary suspension? Because the situation is very dynamic and we’re constantly monitoring it. What’s happening? Last year, 14,621 animals were exported for immediate slaughter. This year so far, 22,711 have already been exported.”2.“Whenever an exporter wants to pursue this option—not others, which are not under discussion—I will refer the matter to the President and the Minister of Economy, because it must be a government decision. It’s a matter of common sense: is it worth leaving workers unemployed and shutting down plants just to allow these exports? We’re also checking if this aligns with World Trade Organization rules, since it’s temporary, not permanent, and non-discriminatory—it doesn’t target any specific country.”
