Colón (Panama), June 15 (EFE).- The century-old Gatún Locks on the Panama Canal have been undergoing refurbishment work since Monday, including the replacement of several valves, as part of the interoceanic waterway’s general maintenance program, which requires annual investments of more than $500 million.The Panama Canal, through which between 3% and 6% of global trade passes, has five sets of locks: three original locks that have been in operation since August 1914 and two additional locks built as part of the canal’s expansion project, which entered service on June 26, 2016.CAMERA: CARLOS LEMOS.FOOTAGE: GENERAL VIEWS OF THE PANAMA CANAL.
