Guatemala City, Mar. 20 (EFE).- Human rights organizations and church institutions held the “Migrant’s Way of the Cross 2026” this Friday in the center of the Guatemalan capital, a symbolic event to highlight the ordeal faced by displaced persons, refugees, and returnees in a country that offers them neither safety nor opportunities.Under the slogan “Migrants, Missionaries of Hope,” the Pastoral Care for Human Mobility and the Franciscan Network, among other groups, denounced the increase in deportations carried out under conditions that violate human dignity.CAMERA: MARIANO MACZ.STATEMENTS BY NERY RODENAS, DIRECTOR OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICE OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF GUATEMALA.TRANSLATION:Well, we need to be clear that there is a humanitarian crisis in our countries. In other words, our countries do not offer opportunities to their citizens; they lack decent jobs and decent educational opportunities. They truly do not have a decent, fulfilling life. That is why many people who face these problems in their lives, and who have every right to do so, seek out other places to improve their living conditions.Generally, the United States, Europe, Mexico, some get stuck along the way, but I think it’s generally a situation in which they face many problems during that journey, not just leaving their family and home; no one wants to leave their family or their homeland, but they have to do it out of necessity.
