ITALY POPE SPAIN

Leo XIV urges Spanish politicians to engage in dialogue and avoid insults

Castel Gandolfo (Italy), June 16 (EFE).- Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday called on Spain’s political leaders to engage in dialogue, listen to one another and avoid “constantly criticizing and insulting” each other. Speaking to reporters in Castel Gandolfo, the pontiff also thanked Spaniards for the warm reception he received during his recent apostolic visit to the country.

Translation:

"What I've said, especially in the Canary Islands, about respect for the individual: often we don't recognize the reasons why these people have had to leave their countries—whether due to violence, war, conflict, or many other reasons—and that's why we simply say, ‘We send them away, so to speak; we wash our hands of the problem.’ But that doesn't seem to me, let's say, to be the most Christian response, so to speak. We must truly respect every person, analyze each case, and, above all, treat people with respect—as people."
