Japan's Nikkei hits fresh record above 71,000

Tokyo, Jun 18 (EFE/EPA).- Japan's benchmark Nikkei index surged to a record closing high on Thursday, boosted by easing geopolitical tensions after the United States and Iran confirmed a peace agreement ending months of conflict.

The Nikkei 225 rose 1,151.24 points, or 1.65%, to finish at 71,053.49, while the broader Topix index gained 1.37% to close at 4,068.18. Investors also welcomed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

Among major movers, SoftBank jumped 4.83% on optimism surrounding artificial intelligence investments, while the yen weakened to around 160 against the dollar, its lowest level since July 2024. (Camera: RODRIGO REYES MARIN).
