GREECE PROTESTS

Greek workers protest over wages, rising living costs

ATHENS, Greece, May 13 (EFE).— Thousands of people protested in Greece on Wednesday during a public sector strike demanding higher wages and measures to address the rising cost of living.

Around 5,000 demonstrators marched in central Athens, according to the public sector union ADEDY, while additional protests were held in Thessaloniki and Patras.

Protesters criticised the conservative government over stagnant salaries, rising living costs and cuts affecting education, healthcare and social services despite the country’s recent fiscal surplus. (Camera: DIEGO SÁEZ PAPACHRISTOU).

SOUNDBITE AND TRANSLATION:

1.DORA THEODOROPULU, CIVIL SERVANT

-Our wages have been stagnant for years, while everything else is getting more expensive: rent, basic necessities. We can no longer make ends meet

2.GRIGORIS KALOMIRIS, RETIRED TEACHER

-We’ve had enough of this policy that freezes spending on education, healthcare, social security, and the environment—in other words, everything that a human being, a worker, or a retiree needs today.
