Congo celebration in Panama preserves cultural identity

PORTOBELO, Panama, May 2 (EFE).— Locals and visitors gathered on Saturday in this Caribbean town to celebrate the Congos, a traditional festival that pays tribute to the legacy of enslaved Africans and their struggle for freedom.

The event features music, dance and theatrical performances that re-enact historical episodes of resistance and emancipation, reflecting Afro-descendant identity.

Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the celebration remains a key expression of cultural memory in Panama. (Camera: CARLOS LEMOS).
