Hiroshima, Japan, Aug 6 (EFE/EPA).– On Wednesday, Japan commemorated the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with a solemn ceremony, renewed calls from survivors to eliminate nuclear weapons, and concern about growing global tensions.

At 8:15 a.m. local time, the exact moment the United States dropped the atomic bomb in 1945, a minute of silence was observed as the Peace Bell tolled.

Officials, diplomats from 120 countries and relatives of the victims gathered at the Peace Memorial Park to honour the approximately 140,000 lives lost in late 1945. (Camera: FRANCK ROBICHON).

Hiroshima remembers atomic bombing 80 years on, amid rising global tensions

Hiroshima, Japan, Aug 6 (EFE).- Hiroshima on Wednesday commemorated the 80th anniversary of the US atomic bombing, under the shadow of global conflicts and amid growing calls from survivors for these weapons to never be used again.

The Peace Bell rang out in the Peace Memorial Park of the western Japanese town during the minute of silence observed at 8.15 am local time, the exact time the bomb "Little Boy" was dropped by the US bomber Enola Gay on the city, killing an estimated 70,000 people instantly, a figure that would double by the end of 1945.
