EPA ARCHIVE: PERSIAN GULF CONFLICT

Food security affected by closure of the Strait of Hormuz

BALTIMORE (United States), 20/03/2026.- (FILE) - Containers on the cargo vessel Dali at the site of the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the Patapsco River as cleanup work continues to deconstruct and take away debris, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, 18 April 2024 (reissued 20 March 2026). 70% of the maritime shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has declined since tensions in the Persian Gulf Region increased on 28 February 2026. According to the International Food Policy Research Institute IFPRI, a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz could affect fertilizers and food production costs, with 30% of global fertilizer passing through the Strait.
